From the bio of Russ Thomas written by Cora Hutchinson (daughter of Kimmel and Lulu) for a book on Ochiltree County, TX: "Elias and Barbra Thomas were both born in Wales. After coming to America, Elias taught languages. They had twelve children." This info is very contrary to the obituaries below. According to Peggy Bakken (daughter of Jesse and Juanita Thomas), Cora Hutchinson had a bad memory and the biography has mistakes in it.
Obituary copied from a newspaper clipping found in an old bible by Kimmel Durbin:
Elias Thomas, Sr., was born in Pennsylvania May the 5, 1826 and died April the 25, 1910 and in 1845 was married to Susanah Umble in Fayett county, Pa., and to this union 12 children were born, 7 sons and 5 daughters of which 2 have passed away, and 10 are still left to morn the loss of their father. Grampa Thomas was converted 60 years ago and united to the Dunkard church of which he lived in faith until death. Grampa Thomas was 83 years 11 months and 20 days old. His presence will be missed in the community. He was an esteemed citizen, an affectionate husband and father.
May the Lord enable us to bow in submission to this out deep affliction, and be warned by the removal of our dear brother, that we too, shall soon follow, that here we have no continuing city. Let our deepest sympathy be extended to the bereaved wife and children, and let us earnestly commend them to God in our prayers who bears our griefs and carries our sorrows in this world of sin.

His remains were followed by a large procession to the Carney Cemetery where his body was laid in the tomb there to await the trumpet of the Lord.

This is quite a bit different from the bio of Russ Thomas. Susanah is often spelled Susannah. There are Umbel surnames as well as Umble in Fayette Co PA and Garrett Co. MD

Mrs Susan Thomas, a pioneer of this country, passed away Friday Evening, January 31, 1913.
Mrs Thomas was born in Fayette county, Penn., Feb. 4, 1830, and was united in marriage to Elias Thomas at the age of 16 years. To this union were born twelve childern, seven sons and five daughters. Her husband and two daughters precedded her to the grave. Those who are left to mourn their loss are: John H. Thomas, Carney, Okla., Andrew J. Thomas, Carney, Okal., Samuel Thomas, Upper Sandusky, Ohio, Elizabeth Markley, Lynden, Kans., Barbery Bliss, Mt. Pleasant, Penn., Russ Thomas, Coyle, Okla., Elias Thomas, Carney, Okla., Cora Thomas, Carney, Okla., Joshua Thomas, Lynden, Kansas, K. K. Thomas, Elton, La., together with a great number of grand and great grand children.
At an early ???? she united with the Dunkard church lived a faithful member until death. She was dearly loved by nearly everbody that knew her. She had a disposition that was genial as the summer air, and as evenly tempered as time. She was not born in the lap of luxury but was a millionaire in an upright and honerable life that will reflect back through the years to come. Mrs Thomas was born in the morning of the last century ??? when the country was new and when all of nature seemed to dwell.
Grandma Thomas, as everybody called her, lived through the most remarkable period of this work history. Affectionately we laied her in the quiet tomb, in the silent cemetery beneath the cold earth, beneath the clouds and stars, which will live affectionately in memory forever.
Funeral sevices were held at the Carney Methodist church, conducted by Rev. G. J. Clark, pastor of the Baptist church, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Carney cemetery.

To the friends who came to us in our hour of trouble and contributed all that human kindness could suggest, we return our most heartfelt thanks and although such devoted friendship can not remove the sad memories that linger aroung our vacant and throws the pur light of our unselfish friendship into a darkened home. May the day be far distant when these friends who gathered around us, will need similar attention, but when that time comes may they receive the same full measure of generous aid and tender sympathy they brought to this home when the death angles claimed our dear mother and grandmother. I found a query in genforum about someone looking into Umbels in Fayette County, PA. (gysgtrvn@yahoo.com was the email). I emailed a reply stating what I knew about Elias and Susannahs birth dates and places and recieved the following information about Susannah and Elias. Carney Oklahoma is a small town located in Lincon County.
I mailed Oklahoma asking for the death certificates of both Elias and Susanah. They responded that they could not find the death certificates.
There is a Dunkard Twp. in Greene Co. PA.
