Excerpts from the biography by Mary Hartman:
Our father, Frank Hartman, was born on March 7, 1877 at Monterey, Indiana. His father was born in Germany and was brought to this country at the age of three. His mother came from Pennsylvania and was of French descent.
There were five brothers, Albert, William, Edward, Charles, and Harry; and two sisters, Jennie and Nellie.
I recall Dad telling me he ran away from home, which was a farm at
that time,
and went to Elkhart, Indiana at the early age of 14 years where he
became
a shoe shine boy and newspaper vendor.
Later he learned the barber trade and set up shop in his home town. He
married
our mother, Emma Kelsey, daughter of Dr. William Kelsey, in St. Anne's
Catholic
Church in January of 1905.
