Posted by Nancy Gornichec on April 06, 1998 at 20:47:12: I am looking for information on Alexander Thomas, b. abt. 1739 or 1741 in Wales, m. Catherine. He originally settled in Philadelphia then moved on to Somerset Co., Pa. He was a sergant in the Revolutionary War. I am trying to find when he came over and any info on him before he came over here. I have a lot of info on his descendants if anyone else is looking for a connection with him. Thanks!
I emailed a request (Apr '99), it bounced. -sjt.
She found me (May '00) and here is what Nancy wrote: Hi! I am the Nancy Gornichec that is mentioned in the info on Alexander and Catherine Thomas, from records of Ron Sands. I come from the Michael Thomas Sr. line through his sons Jacob Michael (my dad) and Abraham Michael (my mom). Apparently he had seen my inquiry to Genforum and tried to email me. We had moved by that time and I had not gotten the internet back for about six months. Thanks, Nancy :) buckss@ecr.net
Richard later writes: I have made contact with a woman named Joyce Keim who I am linked with through the Keim name and Alexander Thomas. She claims to have a ton of info on the Thomas Keim lines in Somerset Co. PA. I believe that she can document that Alexander's father was Alixander and his father was Peter Thomas both form Wales.

Birth: Death: Somerset Co. PA
Spouse: UNNAMED
Marr: PA.
Children: George
(1769-1854),Christian,Benjamin,Jacob,Michael,Alexander,Mary
Alexander Thomas Sr., son of Alexander Thomas, was born in Oct 1740 in St Agnes, Cornwall, England, was christened on 11 Oct 1740 in St Agnes Church, Truro, Cornwall, England, died on 14 Feb 1802 in Conemaugh Twp, Somerset Co, Pa at age 61, and was buried in Greenville Twp, Somerset Co, Pa.
General Notes: The book, "A General Index to a Census of Pensioners for Revolutionary or Military Service 1840" lists Alexander Thomas 12, 138* (Get this census record) (The name followed by the number of the page or pages where the name will be found in the census. an asterisk after the name indicates that the person was the head of a family with whom the pensioner resided.
PENNSYLVANIA PENSIONERS, 1789--(Alphabetically) Act of Congress-1789; to invalids, wounded and disabled; finally allowed March 18, 1818. "The following is therefore a list (though necessarily incomplete in consequence of removals from the State) of the wounded and disabled officers and soldiers of the Revolution resident in the state in 1789. The dates annexed being those to which they were paid, may be regarded as approximate to that of their deaths. This list was made out in 1812."[PA ARCHIVES: 2:11:747]
"Thomas, Alexander, sergt, Mar 1802, dead;"
The "Laurel Messenger", February, 1993, pg. 104: "...This was the Alexander Thomas emigrated to America some time before the Revolution, a pioneer in western PA. He was wounded and captured during the Canadian Campaign, wounded again at the Battle of Germantown, wounded again on the privateer Constitution in it's encounter with the British sloop Savage, while he was serving as Sergeant of Marines."
OCTOBER 4,1777 The Battle of Germantown:
On October 2nd, Washington conceived a bold plan of attack on Howe's
9,000
troop garrsion stationed in Germantown. It called for the simultaneous
advance
of four different units of troops -- moving by night. At dawn, the four
columns
were to converge not far from General Howe's headquarters and catch the
British
by surprise.
The morning started well for the Americans who had the British
retreating.
But Washington's plan went astray when one of his four columns lost its
bearings
in a dense fog and thick smoke. Others columns failed to coordinate
effectively.
The British defense was particularly strong at a Germantown mansion
named
Cliveden where dozens of soldiers had taken refuge. Valuable time was
lost
while the Americans under Henry Knox bombarded the house. Those inside
did
not surrender because they feared that Anthony Wayne's men, still
furious
over the Paoli Massacre, would kill them anyway.
In the end, bad luck and poor timing forced Washington to retreat to
Whitemarsh
with the British in pursuit.
The Battle was an American defeat but it served to boost morale and
self-confidence. They believed the defeat was the result of bad luck,
not
poor tactics.
The Americans suffered 152 losses, 521 wounded, and over 400 captured.
The
British casualties numbered 537 plus 14 captured."
Brian Thomas notes: "He was a Sgt. in Major James Grier's Co., 10th PA.
Reg't,
June-Aug 1780. He held land in Conemaugh and Greenville Twps., Somerset
Co.,
PA. Alexander THOMAS, born about 1741, died 14 Feb 1802, buried Feb
1802
in Greenville Twp. Somerset Co., Pa.. Alexander was married to a woman
named
Catherine , whose maiden name is unknown. Catherine's tombstone bears
the
inscription, "Catherine, wife of Alexander 'Thomas,"
Alexander Thomas's activities after he arrived in
Pennsylvania are
somewhat vague, but enough evidence exist to construct a chronology of
his
movemants. The earliest account is found in the obituary of one of his
grandsons,
Christian Thomas, who died in 1908 it states,:"Alexander sold his farm
and
received as pay a large sum of continental money, which afterwards
became
almost wothless, and he found himself begging. Afterward he came into
possession
of a piece of land not far from Johnstown, where he reared a family."
The farm in eastern Pennsylvania, according to family tradition, was to
have
been in what is now Lebanon County, but this has not been validated.
Alexander's
move to "a piece of land not for from Johnstown", however, can be
substantiated.
A passage from "Two Centruries of the Church of the Brethren in Western
Pennsylvania 1751-1951" states: "We are told that Michael Thomas Sr.
was
born in what is now Conemaugh Townsip, on August 15, 1774 his father,
Alexander
Thomas, patented two-hundred acres of land here, November 3, 1789."
The land patent referred to can be found in the Pennsylvania Archives.
It
is not determined, though, just exactly where that tract of land was.
Alexander
owned another tract of land in what is now Greenville Township,
Somerset
County.
A map gleaned from the county records office clearly shows a tract of
147
acers patented to Alexander Thomas on November 3,1789. It is
interesting
to note that the patent dates for both Alexander's land holdings are
the
same and that the patents were taken, if the account of son Michael's
birthplace
is to be believed, after the family had lived on at least one of the
tracts
for fifteen years.
Alexander Thomas, according to family tradition, was a veteran of the Revolutionary War. Enough evidence has been found to establish this tradition through J. Montgomery Seaver, in his "Thomas Family History", listing two Alexander Thomases as having served in the Revolutionary War. The first was an officer in three different Rhode Island regimants. The second is listed simply as Alexander Thomas of New Jersey. Since neither of these are listed to have served with a Pennsylvania Unit it is unlikely they are our ancestors. The third Alexander Thomas, seems to be the correct one, as his name is listed in the Pennsylvania Archives as a Sergeant in Major James Grier's Company of the tenth Pennsylvavia Regiment "in the seRvice of the United States for June, July and August, 1780." A further entry in the Archives lists a SerGeant Alexander Thomas, R.A. (regular Army) to have been An "Invaled Penshioner" in receipt of his pension at the agency of Philadelphia. This entRy further states his address to be unknown "in consequence of the destruction of the papers of the War Office in 1801 and 1814." but lists his date of death as February 14, 1801. The year of his death listed here corresponds with that handed down through family word of mouth, and is mainly for this reason we believe him to be our somewhat elusive ancestor. Much here has been written to establish that Alexander Thomas, who come from Wales, is our ancestor.
Alexander and Catherine Thomas had seven children, six boys and one girl. Relocated 1772 to PhiladelphIa, PA. from Wales. Married Catherine (?) THOMAS, buried after 1789 at Conemaugh Twp., Somerset Co., on the Walter Mishler farm. [Herr, Jaime & Donna jdherr@essex1.com]
>Birth note: "The seaside village of St. Agnes in Cornwall lies about twelve miles west of Truro. It was in the Anglican church in St. Agnes that Alexander Thomas was christened on October 11, 1740. We have the church record and the Bishop's Transcripts, which are on file in the county record offices in Truro: 'Thomas, Alixander, son of Alixander.'" (Laurel Messenger)

Comments by SJT ,17may2005: 1) Both Richard Thomas and Brian Cartwright mention Mennonites. I don't think either say Alexander was a Mennonite but Glen makes a good point. 3) If I understand Glen correctly, he is talking about the The Laurel Messenger from Brian Cartwright's report, but I'm not sure who he is criticizing. It looks like Glen has looked into this quite a bit, it would be interesting to see what he has found.
William Thomas (wbtst2@atlanticbb.net) writes (March, 2008):
I recently came across your website on the Thomas Family. I am a descendent of George Thomas who was a son of Alexander Thomas and Catherine Beshore. I have done extensive research on Alexander Thomas and Catherine Beshore. Much of the information you have on Alexander Thomas and Catherine Beshore is based on early and mid 20th Century folk lore that is not supported by the records that exist (and there are quite a few).
The most ridiculous claim is that Alexander Thomas was a Revolutionary War Veteran. Alexander Thomas of Somerset County is not Sergeant Alexander Thomas, the Revolutionary War Veteran. That is an indisputable fact, since the war veteran died in 1802, and Alexander Thomas of Somerset County was paying property taxes and selling property as late as 1808 according to a number of Somerset County courthouse records that I have. Another source of misinformation on Alexander Thomas comes from a 1908 obituary on a grandson. The bogus information contained in it was passed on in a number of histories on the Thomas family written since that time. Even that document makes no claim of Alexander being a war veteran. The 1993 Laurel Messenger Article on Alexander Thomas that discusses his war record is in fact a composite of several men named Alexander Thomas, none of which was Alexander Thomas of Somerset County . The ancestral claim to the Thomas family of Cornwall that the same article makes is pure fantasy.
I have written two articles published in the Laurel Messenger (newsletter of the Somerset County Genealogical and Historical Society) in recent years regarding my research on Alexander Thomas. The first was in August of 2003, and the second in November of 2006. These articles provide a fact based analysis of the background of Alexander Thomas that is much different than the folk lore that has been around for years.
